Starting out with the installation of the access panel in the left outer leading edge. I didn’t technically need to do this since I wasn’t installing a stall warning horn, however I went ahead just in case I decide later to install the stall warning. Also I figured it was something different for me and I would need to get practice installing an access panel anyway. (Also never heard anyone say “I really wish I didn’t have that access panel”).
Following the directions it’s an easy enough install. Cleco the retaining ring on the outside of the skin and drill the corner holes. Then use the step drill to open it up to the appropriate size. Cut out the hole along the outer edges of the four holes you drilled. Easy enough?
I purchased one of those nibbler tools from Amazon that fits into a standard drill and thought that may be the best thing to try. It works, but it’s a bit hard to judge the cut-line and the tool is a bit awkward to hold. (I got a little better with it in the next video, but still not sure it’s the best tool for the job). I ended up cutting a bit back from the line and used some snips and a lot of filing to get it down to the line. Labor intensive, but it turned out good.
With the access panel cut out, and the parts and skin dimpled, I had to put it aside until I could prime everything. I then moved on to riveting the ribs and stiffener to the skin. Again, already did this one already, so it went well. I did end up leaving the rivets out of the last few rivet holes in the nose until I can get my wife to help me.
